Do painters need to know how to make paint in order to paint? Do they need to know how it is made? Or do they need to know why it is made? You can either make paint or do something with the paint. And sometimes both. But be clear in your endeavour or you might get lost. Sometimes painters care a little too much about paint and not enough about the paintings they make with it. It's tempting to justify inaction with intellectualisation.
